Astronomy Binoculars
Astronomy binoculars
are highly versatile and can reveal craters on the moon, are great for stargazing or for viewing other galaxies.
Aperture
(diameter of the front lenses) is the most important binoculars specification for stargazing and should be at least 40 millimeters (mm). The larger the diameter, the brighter the images.
Another important specification is the
exit pupil
, which is the width of the beam of light as it leaves the eyepiece. Any binoculars with an exit pupil (objective divided by magnification) of 5 or more is ideal for
astronomical purposes
. Big objective lenses with 60, 80, or even 100-millimeter sizes are best for gathering lots of light in the dark and are most common in this type of binoculars. Also choose binoculars with magnification of at least 7x (times). If the magnification exceeds 10x, you will not be able to hold the binoculars steady enough to get a sharp image and will require a tripod for best viewing.
A
FMC (fully multi-coated) lens
is a must. Because your
astronomy binoculars
may be exposed to dew or moisture when observing at night, you might want to consider waterproof binoculars, although it is not necessary.
