The Moultrie M100 has quickly become one of our favorite camera traps. The 2" internal viewing screen works flawlessly to view taken pictures, but maybe more importantly, it will give you a screen shot of the area in front of the camera. This makes setting the camera up, in a new location, a breeze.
The infrared night flash is absolutely the best on the market for distance and clarity. While many infrared camera traps flash out to around 45 feet, the M-100 has a legitimate 90 foot flash. The only thing it lacks is that it will produce a decent amount of blur on moving objects. The day pictures are bright, clear and have good color.
The detection circuit is solid; the trigger speed is 1.6 seconds and the detection zone is slightly wider than the field of view. This is quite an improvement over previous Moultrie trail cameras. The one downside is the recovery time is a hefty 30 seconds (even though there is a setting for 15 seconds).
As an added bonus, you can use the Moultrie M-100 for time lapse (taking pictures at different time intervals regardless of motion). This makes scouting a large field much easier. However, when set to time lapse, the camera does not detect motion - only takes pictures at the different time intervals. Also, the video has audio capabilities, which makes for a more realistic scene.
This camera uses 8 AA batteries and can utilize Tenergy Nimh Rechargeable Batteries for extended battery life. You can expect 1-1.5 months of battery life or 6,000 - 8,000 pictures (many variables apply to this number).
If it wasn't for the slow recovery time, the M100 may have been a step ahead of the Bushnell Trophy Cam for value, however, at the current recovery time it is just a half-step behind but still an extremely good value overall
